Sopchoppy River

This high dynamic range (=HDR) image is a combination of 4 bracketed photos taken earlier this month with a Canon 40d on a sturdy tripod. The longest exposure was 4 seconds to blur the moving foam.

Of all the photos that I have taken over the years, this image best communicates what I see and how I feel about the Sopchoppy River: wild-dark-deep channels + fantastic-shaped cypress knees + steep banks with so-green foliage = an invaluable treasure.

Lines in the Sand

I haven't posted photos in a while, because of preparing for and reorganizing after our trip to California. I will soon be posting photos from 2 weeks in northern California.

Here are two photos taken yesterday just before sunset at Mashes Sands.

Butterflyweed in a Minute

I photographed this flower cluster on a walk from my house in bright morning sunlight using a Canon G9. In macro mode, the lens was zoomed to full telephoto to not only narrow the field of view of the background but also by using a small aperture to blur the background. I intentionally moved between the flower and the sun to cast a shadow on the flower; the light reflecting off the light sand of the road combined with the bright overhead sky provided interesting lighting. Including the plant's green leaves adds interest to the the orange flower cluster. Yepper ... it took less than a minute to take several photos. This is my favorite of a Butterflyweed.

The scientific name Magnolia granidiflora aptly describes these large incredible creamy white flowers. These three images were made this month in the Wakulla Springs State Park this month.

Mashes Sands Sunsets

The following two photos were taken on Thursday and Saturday of this week at Mashes Sands. I almost always arrive at Mashes Sands as the sun rises; these two very different images were taken as the sun set.

For this first image, I bracketed (under-and-over) exposure in four photos. Four more photos at each exposure were taken with my hand held over the sun to minimize lens flare. Using photoshop, it took about 20 minutes to combine all eight photos into this reasonably realistic image that is close to what I saw on this glorious evening.

These 'summer' clouds rising over the Gulf were amazing ... the deep blue sky was augmented with a polarizer filter on the camera lens.
